Cory Monteith portrays a sweet, innocent character on Glee, but he has a message for fans of that Fox hit:
“I’m not Finn Hudson. I’m lucky on so many counts. I’m lucky to be alive.”
The actor makes this admission in the latest issue of Parade, going into detail about his "serious" drug problem, one that involved "anything and everything, as much as possible."
The British Columbia native says it started when his parents git a divorce and he starting skipping school getting drunk and smoking up at the age of 13. By 19, his mother and his friends organized an intervention because they feared for Cory's life.
"That's when I first went to rehab," he says, adding that the initial stint didn't change much; he returned to the same behavior soon after.
Why did he eventually turn his life around?
Monteith cites as a turning point when he "stole a significant amount of money from a family member. I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn't care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, 'Yeah, it was me.' It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years."
The Glee star moved in with a friend, kicked his drug habit, got a job as a roofer and started to get into acting.
"I don't want kids to think it's okay to drop out of school and get high, and they'll be famous actors, too," says Monteith, who picked up a high school diploma from an alternative school in Victoria this year. "But for those people who might give up: Get real about what you want and go after it. If I can, anyone can."
