José Rizal's father was Francisco Mercado Rizal, an industrious farmer. Meanwhile, José Rizal's mother, Teodora Alonzo y Quintos, a highly cultured woman. At age 8, José Rizal wrote a Tagalog poem, "Sa aking Top Kabata," a theme that revolves around a person's love language. In 1877, at age 16, José Rizal was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with an average "good" from the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. In the same year, José Rizal registered in Philosophy and Literature at the University of Santo Tomas, while at the same time taking courses that lead to the surveyor and expert assessor level at the Ateneo. In 1878, José Rizal enrolled in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas but had to stop when José Rizal in the study felt that the Filipino students are being discriminated upon by their Dominican tutors. On May 3, 1882, José Rizal sailed for Spain where José Rizal continued his studies at the Universidad Central de Madrid.
