Although Dhoni had not played cricket, he impressed with his wicket-keeping skills and became the regular wicketkeeper at the Commando cricket club within a short span of time. In his college days he slowly drifted from his childhood interests and focused only on cricket. Based on his performance at club cricket, he was picked for 1997/98 season Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship and he performed admirably. Mahendra Singh Dhoni started his first class career in the year 1999-2000.
