Villa intend to interview McLeish

Aston Villa have announced that they intend to interview Alex McLeish for their managerial vacancy.

McLeish, currently on holiday, resigned as manager of local rivals Birmingham City on Sunday and is pursuing a case for constructive dismissal.

In a statement on the club website, Villa said they "understand that McLeish is a free agent. We therefore intend to interview him immediately".

"The board has taken his tenure at our rivals very seriously," Villa added.

The Midlands club insisted that the "strong emotions associated with" [his spell at Birmingham] had been taken into account.

"We are determined, still, not to allow that three-and-a-half-year post to disqualify him should he be the best candidate for the role of Aston Villa manager."

Earlier in the day, League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan told BBC Radio 5 live that McLeish's position at Birmingham had become "untenable".
