Acting under her UNHCR goodwill ambassador role, the 36-year-old actress joined United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres on the trek from Malta to the Mediterranean locale for a ceremony paying tribute to all of those who passed away at sea aboard overstocked vessels while trying to escape violence overtaking North Africa.
Prior to visiting Lampedusa, Jolie and Guterres made stops at Malta detention facilities holding refugees who made the journey successfully - with the persons being in custody while awaiting asylum.
Of the situation, Angelina said, "We've spoken about our shared concerns about making sure asylum claims are processed as quickly as possible so no one is sitting in a prison-like situation and waiting on a decision about their status."
She added, "They are not asking to go to any particular country, they just want to find safety to work and to have freedom."
