Brazil thump Norway to progress

Brazil players celebrate a goal Brazil will face either USA or Sweden next Sunday

Brazil secured their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup with an easy 3-0 win over Norway in Group D.

A goal from Augusto Rosana and a brace from Marta saw off the Norweigans who now face a crunch tie against Australia on Wednesday.

The Samba Girls will face either Sweden or USA in the next round.

Brazil's qualification comes at the expense of Equatorial Guinea who lost to Australia earlier on Sunday.

The day's results mean the winners of Wednesday's final Group D match between Norway and Australia will get through to the knock-out stage.

Equatorial Guinea have given a good account of themselves in this tournament so far despite being rank outsiders, losing narrowly to Norway in their opening game.

Like Norway, Australia struggled to control the pacy Africans in the first half of this match, but a goal from Sydney FC foward Leena Khamis soon settled their nerves.

There was controversy in the 16th minute when the Matildas were denied a penalty thanks to a baffling decision from referee Gyoengyi Gaal.

A Khamis effort bounced off the post, only for African defender Bruna to instinctively catch the ball for about five seconds before casually dropping it and playing on.

Several Australian players surrounded the Hungarian referee but their protests were waved away.

Anonman levelled in the 21st minute, capitalising on a defensive mishap before rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.

The Matildas came out fighting in the second half and Emily van Egmond notched her first international goal on 48 minutes, and substitute Lisa De Vanna put the Aussies 3-1 up three minutes later.

Anonman rejuvinated the Africans with seven minutes to play when she got her second, but her side was unable to clinch an equaliser.

Equatorial Guinea's final match in the competition will be against Brazil on Wednesday.
